The Perfect Night In: Five Creepy Films For People Who Hate Gore

Halloween isn’t really a holiday that I celebrate (hence the lack of posts around it) but as I mentioned in my last film guide, there is just something about this time of year that makes me want to huddle up and watch films all day long.

Now Halloween can be a difficult time for people, like me, who are a bit squeamish and feel nervous around gory things. As interested as I am in the latest horror flick to hit the screens, I often have to miss out as they make me uncomfortable.

If you’re feeling like you can relate, here are five creepy films that will definitely thrill without making you feel ill!

Please note I have a preference for cheesy, classic thrillers so you’ll definitely have heard of these before.

THE OTHERS

Set in a big country manor in the middle of nowhere, this paranormal thriller is exactly my cup of tea. If you’ve not seen it before, prepare yourself for a wonderfully cheesy but quite clever twist. It’s creepy but there is no gore to be seen.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT

I know this low-budget film is kind of seen as a joke now, but I still genuinely really like it. I have this thing about hand-held camera films though. Maybe it’s because I feel safe with them, as no matter how creepy they get I know how it’s all going to end. It’s predictable and a bit detail-heavy at points, but still a good one to get you in the Halloween spirit.

SIXTH SENSE

Yet another classic/ridiculed film! Are you getting what my film taste is now? I’ll admit if you’re really bad with gore then maybe give this one a miss, as there are some minor elements to it. For the most part though it just relies on tension and the odd jump scare to get you in the creepy mood.

INSIDIOUS (3)

I’ve seen all of the three of these movies and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with them all! With newer horror films I am always concerned that they will be filled with gruesome scenes, meaning I can’t watch them. But these are paranormal based with nothing too traumatising at all.  I’ve highlighted the final one in the trilogy as it’s my favourite, and genuinely one of the best thrillers I’ve ever seen.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

Finally, this is another ridiculous film series but I still enjoy them. Again, it’s that hand-held camera thing – it just gets to me. Despite initial rumours, there is no gore in this one. It simply relies on tension and a little bit of boredom to get you feeling all spooked.

Six Movies For A Family – Friendly Halloween

Alright, so I know that most people have been out this weekend celebrating all things spooky, meaning this post may seem a little late and irrelevant now but Halloween still hasn’t arrived. And maybe it’s just me, but there’s something about this whole season with it’s dark nights and cold weather, that makes me want to wrap myself up in a blanket and watch movies with loved ones.

So if you’re on the same general wavelength or you fancy getting a little festive this week, tuck yourself up, grab a cuppa and watch one of these family-friendly flicks:

Corpse Bride

This Tim Burton classic is an obvious favourite for Halloween. It’s a film I used to watch constantly as a kid. With a mixture of music, comedy and a little bit of the feels it’s a wonderful one to watch no matter your age.

Casper

This film is basically nostalgia central for me and one of my absolute childhood favourites. I mean, who can resist Casper the friendly ghost?!

I’ll admit the scene where the dad is looking in the mirror after being messed around with by the three uncles freaked me out completely when I was little, but thankfully that doesn’t have the same effect, like, a decade later.

Frankinweenie

This is such an underated Disney film I feel! It’s a quirky but heartwarming story about the friendship between a young boy and his dog. Of course, with Tim Burton involved, things get a little spooky when the young boy tries to bring his dog back to life.

Monster House

Renowned for it’s double entendre gags, this film was a complete surprise hit for me. It’s a little bit creepy with it’s twists and turns, but overall it’s very funny and definitely something to get stuck into.

Casper Meets Wendy

I’ve never really heard many people mention this movie online and I just can’t understand why. Starring an incredibly young Hilary Duff, this is an adorable story of a lonely witch who makes friends with Casper, our favourite friendly ghost, despite the ongoing rivalry among all things supernatural. Definitely a hit for younger viewers (and old!)

Coraline

And finally, I feel like no Halloween list would be complete without Coraline! This film still genuinely scares me, even though I’m now technically an adult. It’s an interesting story and wonderfully produced, but there’s something about those buttons that freaks me right out. Definitely keep your pillows near by for this one!

Twenty-One Things I’ve Learnt In 21 Years

This is something I’ve seen going around a lot and I think it’s lovely to hear people’s insights, see some changes and generally just try to better yourself.

Now I’m a 21 year-old I’ve been reflecting a lot on the past (as well as looking forward to the future!) and even though it might not feel like it sometimes, I’ve done so much and grown loads. Here are some key things I’ve learnt over the years that may be beneficial to you.

1. Practising pays off, even though it can be really tedious and annoying.

For me a key area I learnt this was makeup, and after many years of messing about with the stuff for fun I’m finally getting okay at it. This also applies to other, non-superficial areas too! Just keep showing up and pushing and you’ll get there.

2. No one knows what they’re doing. Literally no one.

Not even that girl who looks like she has it all together. I know this because I pretend to be her and I still haven’t got a clue. I thought that by 21 I’d have everything figured out, but every day is still a learning curve. It’s totally okay, we’ll figure it out one day- maybe.

3. Always be yourself. Do what feels right for you at all times.

Any other action or behaviour will come across awkward, weird and uncomfortable for everyone, especially you! Listen to yourself and try to not focus on what other people might think. You have to live with yourself everyday and that is something you should honour.

4. Don’t be afraid to change it up.

A lot of people go through this stage of altering their appearance, friendships and values when they’re a young teen but I think it’s something that we should constantly do. Experiment with different versions of yourself and try new things to figure out what you like. It’s how you often find that you have always been exactly how you were meant to be.

5. Being girly isn’t a weakness.

Feminism! This one took me far to long to grasp. Liking pink, wearing ‘feminine’ fashion, being interested in beauty… The list is endless. None of the things are a bad or should be thought of with guilt. You are never just one thing so why pigeon-hole yourself?

6. It’s better to not have been the popular one at school.

It gives you an opportunity to grow, change and focus on what is really important right now. School may be considered the ‘best years of your life’ by adults, but trust me it’s not. You have so much wonder to come and luckily you haven’t peaked too early!

7. It takes time to find the right contraception.

 You need to educate yourself, try things and listen to your body. The first method you try might not be your last.

8. There are no deadlines on milestones.

You’re going through life at your own pace so it’s pointless to compare what you’re doing with other people’s experiences. (See: sex, first kisses, getting drunk, education, getting married, etc.)

9. Creating a safe place for yourself is the best act of self care. 

Whether that place is outside or in your house, take time to figure out where you feel the safest and make that space exactly how you want it. This will be your sanctuary for the days when things seem to be a much and a place for you to chill out whenever necessary.

10. Just because your life and/or choices look different to other people doesn’t mean they’re wrong.

“Comparison is the thief of joy”

You know yourself best, so just do what’s right for you even if it’s difficult or doesn’t match up to others. You should be your number one and this takes time to understand and accept. I promise you- you’re doing fine.

11. Be grateful for your parents/guardians/friends. They do so much for you.

This can be hard to see sometimes but be grateful for those around you who care because one day they may not be around. Gratitude is a wonderful thing to practice and can change your outlook and the way you handle so many different situations.

12. Time doesn’t have to be an important factor in friendships.

You don’t have to stay friends with someone just because you always have been and alternatively you can become brilliant friends with someone you’ve just met. Time isn’t really an important factor, or at least it doesn’t have to be. Sometime you just need to go with your gut and heart to find the right people.

13. Try to save some of your money for a rainy day. Having something behind you can make the world of difference. 

Try to budget and keep bits of money back in case you ever need it. If not, it’ll come in handy for that trip you want to do or that bag you’ve wanted for ages. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. 

14. Don’t feel bad about feeling bad.

Whether you’re feeling bad right now, or you’re annoyed at past you, we need these times to grow and get to a better place. Everything is valid.

15. Worrying can destroy everything you care about. 

Try to switch off and get out of your head a bit because worrying and overthinking will ruin your relationships, friendships and experiences. Take a walk, open up to someone close or write it down. You need to find a way to get these things out of your head so you can be more open to the important, and present, things.

16. The internet doesn’t need to know everything you’re up to.

You don’t have to post it to prove that it happened and it doesn’t have to be an instant thing either. Don’t let sharing stuff get in the way of your experiences. It’s brilliant to share and show off what you’ve been up to, where you’ve been and who you’ve seen but remember to enjoy the moment a bit first.

17. Metal actually does explode in the microwave.

I found this out the hard way. It can also catch fire too so be careful and stay aware!

18. Learn how to be on your own.

It might become the best lesson you’ll ever learn. You need to rely on yourself totally and be your own best friend because at the end of the day, you are the only guarantee in life.

19. A good bra will change your life.

It’ll make you look and feel amazing, trust me. It might even be worth spending that little bit more money in order to feel this way. Comfort and confidence are the key to any fashion experience.

20. You can trust places like you trust people.

It can be an instant feeling when you get there; you’re definitely going to like it here. I’ve experienced this only a handful of times in my life but it’s often a great factor when making major decisions (see: choosing a university, moving away, work)

21. The loudest people often don’t have anything to shout about.

Whether they’re bragging about sex, drinking, their love life or success you never get to see what actually goes on behind closed doors so take everything with a pinch of salt. Try not to get too caught up in what other people are doing, because they’re not you and everyone experiences things differently.


Happy Birthday Me!

I’m expecting this year to be full of growth, change, joy and fear and I am so buzzing for it. Although things may get tough I’m so proud of myself for everything I’ve done to get here and I love that I’m only going to continue to learn more.

My New Year’s Resolutions

Can you believe it’s 2017, man? It’s absolutely crazy but let’s try not to get too upset about how fast everything is going. Although I’m not a fan of New Years or the month of January as a whole, I’m trying to be positive and focus on the fact it’s a fresh start.

Here are some of the things I want to achieve this year. Let’s say they’re more ‘goals’ then resolutions:

  • Travel More

I travelled more in 2016 than I think I have in my entire life. And not all of it was 2 week holidays or even far away from my hometown, but I loved every experience. It made me realise how good getting away from where you live can be, even if it’s just for a day. In 2017 I want to travel more especially to places in the UK (I don’t think I could afford many abraod trips anyway!). It’s going to require some saving, but I think I’d rather spend money on some experiences rather than more and more makeup palettes. I think, ha!

  • Be More Spontaneous

This kind of goes hand-in-hand with travel more, but I think it’s going to be harder. I’m a born worrier and doing things without less than a weeks’ notice makes me very stressed. But there were a handful of stand-out moments in 2016 where I just went for it and it was the best decision I could have made. I don’t think I’ll ever be the kind of person who doens’t plan and could just jump on a plane, or whatever. But I think I need to learn that not everything needs to be planned to the minute detail.

  • Blogging Focus

I am so passionate about and generally in love with this blog. It’s my little space where I get to do what I love whenever I want and it’s been such a healthy and helpful thing for me to do. I want to keep going with this blog in 2017 and work on it even more. I finish university this year (*screams*) and things are generally going to be changing a lot for me and I’d love to share it all on this platform. I know it’s basically nothing in the grand scheme of the internet but it’s mine and I’m so happy to be creating.

  • Buy Less, Use More

I spend an awful lot of money on clothes and makeup. Those are my two main areas when spending and since going to university I’ve gotten into the terrible habit of emotional shopping. In 2017 I want to try to spend less on crap, basically. I have more than enough bits to keep me going. Besides, towards the end of 2016 I was trying to use up the makeup I had before I purchased anymore and I really enjoyed doing that. I want to try to stop buying things in bulk and maybe save up for better quality pieces when and if I need them.

  • Calm Down

As I mentioned, I’m a stresser. I get really nervous and worried and often make myself ill through stressing about nothing. Although 2017 is a terrifying and busy year for me I really want to try to work on calming myself down. I can’t seem to enjoy anything because I’m so worried about what might happen or what’s going to happen. It’s really annoying and I want to work on it. I’ll always be a worrier, it’s just who I am, but there’s no need for it to get in the way of everything I try to do.

  • See More Live Shows

I love going to concerts and the theatre so much, but unfortunately due to the cost and time I can’t go that often. However in 2017 I do want to make an active effort to go see more live concerts and live shows because the experience is always phenomenal. Regardless of what I see, whether that’s a show or a gig, I always walk away with amazing memories. It can seriously change your outlook and I think it’s healthy to experience things like this live now and again.

  • Self-Loving

This is something I promise myself every year but I really want to work on my self-love and confidence. I’m going to be 21 this year and it seems silly that I’m still insecure and not 100% my own best friend yet. I’m so passionate about self-love and I want everyone to love who they are, so why not include myself in that too?

I wish you all the absolute happiest of new years and I know 2017 is going to bring good things to us all. I am so grateful for those of you who are still reading this blog. You mean the world.

Important Things To Remember This Festive Season

This season is meant to be the happiest of them all. I mean the month of Christmas and all the other festivities; a time when we’re supposed to be surrounded by friends, family and wonderful food, what’s not to love? But for many people it’s just another month in the year. Or for some, even with all the festive cheer, this month still has it’s struggles and it;s difficulties.

But because we’re all meant to be so merry and bright (sorry) this month, it tends to make our dark days darker as we feel like there must be something wrong with us. To be sad, anxious or just generally not having the best time during Christmas? How can that be possible? Don’t worry, I get you.

If you are really struggling, at this time or any, please speak to someone. But for the most part, here are some important things to remember when things get a bit much this season:

  • Don’t Compare Yourself With Others

This is something I have mentioned a few times in various posts and something I try to remind myself on a daily basis. But I think it’s especially relevant during the Christmas period. It seems that everywhere people are having a perfect festive season; their families are so close and get on so well; they have enough money to buy amazing presents for everyone in their life and even the fact that people have time off is something we can get envious of. But it’s important to appreciate what you have going on and basically ignore everything else. Whenever we look at what other people have in comparison with our own, nine times out of ten we come out on the bottom. We get so busy obsessing about how we aren’t as good as the other person that we lose sight of everything we have and all the wonderful things going on with us. This one doesn’t have a quick fix and I’m still struggling on it, but please spend more time on what you have and less on other people. It’s such an unhealthy exercise to out yourself through.

  • Social Media Is A Highlight Reel

Similar to what I’ve just mentioned, it’s so easy to feel disheartened when you’re bombarded with images of perfect everything 24/7. Now that it’s Christmas we’re seeing images and videos of the ‘perfect’ way to do it, from the best decorations to expensive gifts to even constant happiness. With social media it can often feel like you’re the only one left out, but you need to remember that it’s a highlight reel. Every post on any site has been chosen carefully (in most cases) to highlight something. We all do it. Everything is edited and cut to only show what the creator has chosen to allow us to see. Why wouldn’t you just show the best parts of yourself or your day if you could? Which is all well and good but when it’s a constant thing it’s easy to forget that real life just isn’t like that. Not everyone looks flawless, feels 100% happy or is having the best day all of the time. Just because that’s what you see on social media, doesn’t make it true.

  • Have Realistic Expectations

We all do it every year, I know. That thing where we big up Christmas and New Year and think we’re going to have the best one ever. We try to do so many things and make everything perfect that on the day nothing is good enough and we’re left disappointed. The key to this is be realistic. You don’t have to be negative, just think about the Christmases you’ve had in the past and the simple things that made them great. Do not try to replicate them or try to plan anything too much. This is really hard for someone like me to do, but it’s really important to try to ‘go with the flow’ a little bit this season. With all the stress and excitement things are bound to go wrong. With people coming and going so much, plans aren’t going to get stuck to. Plan as much as you need (ie. get your presents in before the big day!) but don’t put too much emphasis on everything being the best. Instead focus on having a good time, spending some time with loved ones and taking a break when you can.

  • It’s Only One Day

This is something I think we all forget in the excitement and stress, but Christmas is really only one day of your life. Of course it’s nice to make a big effort and join in with the excitement all month long but you need to remember that it’s only a day. When things feel like they’re getting on top of you and you’re struggling to do everything at once, take a breather because it’s only a day. 24 hours. That’s it, then it’s over. Now I’m not encouraging you to drop everything, become a total Scrooge because ‘fuck it it’s only one day’ but I feel like we all go a bit crazy over the month of December and it is a bit daft. There’s plenty of time to see your family and friends, to chill out and have a laugh. Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean you have to do everything at once.

11 Small Things To Do This Festive Season

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, it’s hard to escape this festive feeling that’s floating around right now.This month, whether you like it or not, is all about being merry and loving- which are wonderful things to be and something we can all strive to have more of in our everyday lives.  But it can sometimes be a difficult time of the year for a lot of people, as there’s often so much pressure to make Christmas perfect and do so much at once. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed.

But today I want to set a little challenge for me and you. Playing on the idea that this month is meant to be all about positivity and love, here are 11 small things you should make time for this month that are sure to bring these feelings to you and your loved ones:

  • Take an afternoon off to yourself. Be selfish, even for just a few hours. 
  • Have a long, uninterrupted conversation with a friend or partner.Put the world to rights.
  • Visit your grandparents or elderly relative. It’ll mean the world the them.
  • Play board games with the people you live with right nowThere’s nothing more frustrating or hilarious than a board game.
  • Hug your parents. Be kind, they’ve done a lot for you.
  • Crack open to Celebrations and have a movie night. These dark nights are the perfect time for a movie night.
  • Put up some fairy lights. Any excuse to make your room look cute, eh?
  • Watch a nostalgic film. Take your mind off what’s troubling you now and relax.
  • Smile at at least 2 strangers today. “Better to be the one who smiled then the one who didn’t”
  • Say yes. We all get so busy, but try your best to take time out for other people.
  • Bake a cake. Or stick some pre-made cookie dough in the oven for 20 minutes. 
  • Treat yourself. Because you deserve it. You’re doing the best you can and that’s amazing.

Five Christmas Films You Should Watch This Season

While trying to get into the Christmas spirit, I know many of us turn to our favourite festive movies. With happy stories about family, love and Santa there’s no better way to get yourself ready for Christmas!

Here are my top five Christmas films that I’ll be watching this season and I think you should too:

Love Actually is one of my favourite films of all time, let alone favourite Christmas film! It’s such a heartwarming, lovely celebration of all kinds of love from romantic to family to friendship. It’ll make you laugh, cry and overall just appriciate the people you have in your life right now.

I remember going to see this film in Reception, as part of a school trip, and I’ve loved it ever since. I know we’ve all seen it a million times but it’s a classic that I love to come back to every year. It’s another heartwarming, funny film (my favourite kind) and the Grinch, although he’s a bit creepy, only seems to become more and more relatable as I get older!

This is my all-time favourite Christmas film and one I try to watch every year. It’s such a lovely film about the magic of Christmas and as a kid (who am I kidding? As an adult too!) getting to see this version of the North Pole, Santa and the elves makes me feel so festive and excited.

Are you getting the fact that I really enjoy funny films? This one is a favourite in my household and it never fails to make me belly-laugh. It’s such a cute film about a father trying to make his son’s Christmas by getting him the most sought-after toy. This is one I feel like all parents can relate to! It’s a silly film that is guaranteed to make you giggle.

I was obsessed with this film series when I was younger (probably too young to be watching it, to be fair). The final in the series, this film is based around the dogs in the family instead of the babies. As a fan of cheesy comedy, dogs and John Travolta (Grease is the word) this film fills me with nostalgia and still makes me laugh today.

The Scrooge Guide: Reasons To be Happy This Festive Season 

There’s no escaping Christmas now, no matter how hard you try. This is a wonderful time of the year but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. And I get that.

Christmas can be a magical and fun time, if you celebrate it. But for some it’s just another month in the year. This post is for you. It’s also for you if you love Christmas, of course, because I’m guessing any mention of it has you practically buzzing with excitement.

Whether you like Christmas or not, or even if you don’t celebrate it so can’t relate to all this festive cheer, here are some reasons to be happy this festive season:

  • It’s now totally acceptable to stay indoors and choose chocolate over socialising
  • People don’t question the amount of hot drinks you consume in a day.
  • Wearing a onesie at any time in the day because it’s too cold to wear anything else.
  • Seeing the sky change into magical colours as the sun rises too late and sets too early.  Yes we have less sun in this season, but look how pretty that sky is!
  • Fairy lights
  • Party food. Mini cheeseburger anyone?
  • Your usually boring town or city is transformed into a magical, winter kingdom
  • Chocolate and cheese are the only courses you need
  • Going for walks all wrapped up but still returning with a nose Rudolph would be proud of
  • It’s totally okay to eat chocolate first thing in the morning
  • Oversized jumpers and chunky boots are trendy and everywhere once again
  • Christmas markets.  Yes they’re super festive but the food!

As you can see, my favourite thing about this season is the food! What do you like most about this time if the year?
